We’re filled with mixed emotions as we announce the retirement of a cherished member of the Hafer family.
A cornerstone of our history and success, architect David Wills is retiring after 47 years with the firm. He joined Hafer in April 1978, just three months after Hafer’s founding.
David recalls a memory from his first day at Hafer when founder Ed Hafer placed a drawing on his desk and said, “Make it a building.” Though the task seemed daunting (David was fresh out of school), he did, and it stands currently as the Oral Surgery Group at Virginia and Mary Street near Evansville’s Deaconess Midtown Hospital.
David’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping Hafer into what it is today. He became a principal of the firm in 1984 and his work spans a legacy of impactful projects such as the Business and Engineering Center at University of Southern Indiana, Hospice of Western Kentucky, the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky; and many, many more projects that continue to enrich the communities we serve.
Beyond his undeniable talent and passion as an architect, David is a respected leader and mentor. When Hafer acquired Owensboro firm Collignon & Nunley Architects in 2008, David stepped up to lead that office, expanding Hafer’s presence and influence across the Commonwealth. His colleagues have long valued his wisdom, guidance and sharp sense of humor.
Though he is officially retiring, David is still finishing up a few projects at Hafer, continuing to lend his expertise as he transitions into this new chapter. He encourages younger professionals to embrace curiosity, remain lifelong learners and strive to become well-rounded in their craft.
As he steps into this exciting new chapter, David plans to explore his passions, including playing the cello, watercolor painting, staying active, and discovering new hobbies. Most importantly, he looks forward to spending more time with wife Maurita, and their two daughters and their families – including seven grandchildren.
Please join us in celebrating David’s extraordinary career and wishing him all the best in his retirement!
