Commonwealth of Kentucky
Kentucky State Parks Pool Assessments
This project delivered a comprehensive, statewide evaluation of 13 state park pools, indoor and outdoor, providing a clear, strategic roadmap for revitalizing aquatic facilities across the Commonwealth. Taking a holistic approach, the team assessed not only the pools themselves but also supporting infrastructure—parking, bathhouses, mechanical and electrical systems, and support spaces—to identify priorities that support safe, sustainable, and enjoyable summer experiences.
The assessments uncovered opportunities to modernize aging facilities, from replacing outdated baby pools with engaging splash pads to identifying targeted upgrades and replacements, each paired with clear cost guidance. In close partnership with Counsilman-Hunsaker, the team engaged users and staff to understand how the facilities function day to day, shaping improvements that enhance usability, streamline operations, and support efficient staffing.
Guided by safety standards and operational best practices, each pool received a tailored solution reflecting its community’s unique needs and goals. Together, these strategic assessments lay the foundation for thoughtful renovations—bringing more summer fun, improved experiences, and long-term value to communities across the Commonwealth.
