A modern pub, Topper Grill & Pub, is open to students, staff and faculty on WKU’s campus in the Garrett Conference Center. WKU hired Hafer to design the project in a fairly quick timeframe. Hafer used their creative skills to come up with some really unique and interesting features which included repurposing many items. To save time, the designers sourced basic materials to create distinctive elements highlighted throughout the restaurant.

Formerly a classroom, the space was renovated into a contemporary, industrial style pub featuring exposed structural ceiling and wood and steel finishes throughout. The entry was expanded to be more visibly open with large glass windows that lure more patrons. The bar features custom welded steel liquor displays, chalkboard signage and the countertop is a repurposed bowling alley floor from the Garret Conference Center. The unique ceiling element was created from simple 2x4 wood planks. Designer lighting and wood grained tile flooring pull the final look together.

Although this is a new concept for WKU, Topper Grill & Pub is a welcome addition to the social offerings at the University. It is a fun, lively atmosphere for students and faculty to interact with one another in a different setting.
