As technology and the world around us evolves, so have libraries. The Henderson County library desired to create a 21st Century library that would meet the needs of the community now and in the future. Hafer worked with library staff to determine requirements and understand the objectives to design a new library that the community would utilize in ways never thought of before.
The current design demonstrates remodeling of their existing library and a 20,000 sf addition. The children’s library will be expanded to include more activity space as well as a new reading room with cascading seating stairs. A teen space will be introduced complete with a media wall and necessary equipment to host video game nights and other fun events.
New to the community will be a makerspace within the library. This collaborative space will give people access to the resources, knowledge, and tools they can share to develop innovative products. It will house a 3D printer, craft area, audio-visual editing station, sound booth and other equipment.
The addition will contain a 150-person community room with flexible dividing walls so one large event could occur or three separate events simultaneously. This room expands onto the balcony with stunning views overlooking the Ohio River. The project is currently in design and is expected to start construction in 2018.
