Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar is the place for neighborly comradery, whiskey on tap and good food—all rooted in the story of Big Whiskey, the small-town tavern legend.

The Hafer design team transformed the former open floor plan into a more intimate, traditional layout, organizing dining into balanced sections of 15–20 guests to support both small gatherings and larger parties. Strategically placed overhead doors allow for flexible space divisions and connection to the street-side patio, enhancing both privacy and engagement with the urban environment.

This location of the franchise in downtown Owensboro merges the brand’s signature character with a strong sense of local identity. The design incorporates the brand’s exposed brick, rough sawn wood, and deep maroon walls, and Owensboro-specific elements—including whiskey barrel décor from Green River Distillery and a gallery wall of local landmarks and hometown heroes. A custom mural above the bar highlights Big Whiskey’s story with sketches, quotes, and recipes, reinforcing the restaurant’s identity. The mural also includes depictions of the owner’s beloved dachsunds.

The result is a space that feels distinctly Owensboro while maintaining the unmistakable character of Big Whiskey’s, fostering connection and a memorable dining experience.
