Robinson Elementary School

In 2022, floods ravaged the Perry County School District’s Robinson Elementary School. In the aftermath, the school knew they would need to rebuild after their community recuperated from the loss. In the interim, they have been sharing a building between two schools.

Now, the Bluejay community is looking to the future as construction begins on the new Robinson Elementary School. Creating a whole new building for the preschool-through-eighth-grade students means designing spaces to support student needs. These features include covered entryways, a large gymnasium, media center, music room, and dedicated science and art classrooms. A large playground behind the building encourages students to balance their studies with fun.

The site is situated safely on top of a hill and will be home to the combined preschool-through-eighth-grade building. Its linear floor plan caters to the elongated site. The main corridor features an angle change to differentiate between age groups within the building, with grades 1-4 taking up the first wing of the corridor, followed by grades 5-8 in the second wing. The cafeteria and gymnasium book end the school.

The cafeteria will double as a storm shelter that holds 400 people. The windows and openings are covered with ICC 500-rated coiling doors built to withstand extreme weather conditions and protect the students within. The school is built with the future in mind, leaving space to expand to several more classrooms. Brick will be used thoughtfully throughout, with accents of blue to honor Robinson Elementary’s signature colors.

Robinson Elementary is looking forward to having a building for students to call their own.
