Walter Freeman Fire Department Training Center

As first responders, educators, and community protectors, firefighters are always learning. Now, new and current firefighters in Owensboro, KY, and the surrounding region have a dedicated facility to hone their skills. The new Walter Freeman Fire Department Training Center spans an entire city block and includes a firehouse, training space, and fire training tower.

Training takes place in the 12,030-square-foot building, which features traditional classrooms, training bays, offices, and supplemental learning spaces. While the facility also functions as a firehouse, it includes a kitchen, locker room with sauna, and fitness center. Because it is considered an essential facility, a community storm shelter was also incorporated into the design. Just outside, a manufactured training tower supports on-grade burn training, equipped with burn rooms, floor-to-floor access openings, training roof openings, and rappelling davits.

Together, these features create a modern, functional space that strengthens firefighter readiness and enhances public safety throughout the region.
