Henderson Municipal Power & Light

New Headquarters

Lights. Heating. Electricity. It’s a simple fact that our society requires power for a smooth operation. When Henderson Municipal Power & Light (HMP&L) asked for a new headquarters that housed all departments—the Hafer team understood how important it was to get this project right for their staff and the community. The residents have relied on HMP&L for their power supply for over 125 years, so for this new build project, the design incorporates pieces of the company’s history, industrial design elements and modern design ideas into the new headquarters.

Walking through the front doors, you are greeted by the front office desk and a vintage HMP&L sign from the original building. The front of the building houses all office personnel in offices featuring natural wood textures, industrial concrete floors, highlights of greenery, and pops of the HMP&L blue branding. Industry tools are integrated into these spaces including a display of antique insulators from powerlines and an electric wire wall that is used as a privacy barrier for a conference room. The board room is designed as a  focal point, as the community is welcomed into board meetings, and it incorporates a floor-to-ceiling  map of Henderson, KY.

The transition into the other departments of HMP&L was seamless for the design team as the industrial design elements featured in the office naturally carry over into the rest of the building. There are training rooms, locker rooms, a meter shop, garage, and even warehouse included in this project. There is also a space dedicated to storm dispatching so HMP&L can better serve the Henderson community in the case of a severe weather event.

Now complete, the staff at Henderson Municipal Power & Light have a place where they love to come to work.
