Saint Meinrad Archabbey

The monastery at Saint Meinrad Archabbey is home to approximately 90 Benedictine monks ages 24 to 96. The dormitory style rooms they call “cells” are located within these private living quarters as well as the infirmary where older monks are cared for. This three-story monastery had not received a renovation since it was first built and was in need of structural repairs, replacement of the plumbing and HVAC systems, and modernization of the interiors to make the building more efficient for residents.  A geothermal system with 94 vertical wells was installed to produce energy needed to heat and cool the building, also contributing to an energy efficient solution.

The areas remodeled for this project included the calefactory, the living room shared by monks, and the refectory, the dining room where monks are able to enjoy a meal with one another. With a desire for simplicity, the goal was to create a relaxing environment rather than the cafeteria style dining room they previously had. In the infirmary, an addition and renovation allowed to expand the size of the rooms and corridor so monks can receive better healthcare and an improved quality of life. A new separate kitchen and dining room were added to the infirmary as well. A new outdoor chapel was created between the two buildings which is enclosed.

The monks of Saint Meinrad dedicate their lives to prayer and work. The newly remodeled living quarters is a blessing to the monks and provides them with comfort and serenity to live out their mission.
