Deaconess Midtown Hospital

Unit 5500/5600 Renovation

Previously a skilled nursing unit, Unit 5500/5600 was renovated into a surgical/renal nursing unit. The unit is comprised of private surgical and renal patient rooms, a dialysis suite with an isolation room, and support services. The overarching goal of the renovation was to provide patients with a soothing, healing environment.

Careful consideration was given to the colors and materials chosen for this unit. The wood materials and soft colors provide a warm and soothing environment which is important for the patients on this floor.

Due to the critical nature of the project and renovation, a few challenges arose. The unit required a license change and close coordination with the State of Indiana and reviewing agency to transform it into a surgical nursing unit. In addition, the main electrical feeders had to be replaced in order to separate the power into critical, life safety and equipment branches.

One of the unique features of this unit and a new concept for Deaconess was the addition of “The Suites”. The Suites are family-friendly patient suites much like a boutique hotel. They contain a well-appointed patient room, a living room, and a guest room with queen size bed and private bathroom. Patients and their families enjoy the same level of health care services but with added amenities.

Since the unit and The Suites have been open, patients and their families have enjoyed having a unique option for their hospital stay. Having family nearby is comforting to the patients and the family is certainly more comfortable having their own private, attached room. Family members are able to relax but also be close to their loved one at all times.
